Rough Patch or Wrong Fit?

May 27, 2026

Woman journaling

Every long relationship has rough patches. The trouble is that "rough patch" is also the most comfortable lie we tell ourselves about a relationship that has quietly stopped working.

The difference that matters

A rough patch is a season. It has a shape, a cause, and — crucially — two people leaning into it. A wrong fit is a pattern. It repeats, it drains, and you are usually the only one doing the leaning.

Four questions to ask yourself tonight

One: When you picture staying exactly as things are for five more years, what does your body do? Two: Are you describing problems, or describing him? Three: When you bring up what you need, do you get curiosity — or management? Four: Who would you become if you stopped waiting for him to change?

Notice that none of these ask you to decide. They ask you to see. Clarity comes first; the decision comes after, and it comes far more easily than you fear.

If your answers unsettled you, that is not a crisis — it is information. The women I work with do not regret seeing clearly. They only ever regret how long they waited to look.
